Westward Ho!

June 10, 1850

We have been studying about the Western Frontier. One of our activities in this project was Westward Ho! Westward Ho is a group activity where we got into groups and pretended we were families going on the Oregon Trail. We were a pioneer wife, husband, son or daughter. We had grandfathers come along also. Every time we got together in our groups, we had a new crisis in our hands. We all took a part in helping to solve the problem.

We wrote journal entries to record the solutions. After we solved problems as a family, we wrote down our own personal entries. We wrote what we saw, what our problems were, what our accomplishments were and our own personal thoughts. Sometimes our thoughts were about our future homesteads. Sometimes our thoughts were our accomplishments such as fording a river or hunting more game. We also had a Western Ho-down with line dancing, tracking wild animals, and constructing our own covered wagons! Two very special guests entertained us - Rebecca and her Dad played cowbow tunes on their "fiddles"! We also watched videos about Native American Culture in our classrooms. That was what we did in Westward Ho! It was a great way to end the year!
