We had a special guest come into our room to talk about soil. Her name is Marjorie Winters and she is from the Roaring Brook Nature Center. She told us that good bacteria tries to fight the bad bacteria that try to destroy the roots. Fungus can stick to a tree and then to a plant twelve inches away. Did you know that protozoas [tiny bugs] live in soil? Did you know that Nematodes eat the Amoebas? Slime from mites stick to the roots and when you go to dig up the roots, it is not easy. There is glue that bunches up and makes the soil look like rocks. This is nature's plan to prevent erosion. If you try to grow plants in sand they will not grow! Ground up leaves and minerals are also included in the soil! Do you know the kinds of soil? They are topsoil, subsoil and bedrock. Written by Emma and Abby |
