(from the FMF Basics Handbook):
1. About the Fulbright Memorial Fund
The FMF Program is funded by the Government of Japan as part of the
"People-to-People Exchange" initiatives. Established in
1996, FMF commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Fulbright Program, which has
provided scholarships for 6,800 Japanese nationals to study in America. Japanese
Fulbright awardess have made great contributions to Japanese society. This
is one way to say "Thank you" to Americans and to express Japan's continued commitment
to better understanding and further friendship between our two nations.
In launching the FMF program, the Japanese Government chose the Japan-U.S. Educational Commission (JUSEC), the Fulbright Commission in Japan) to administer the FMF programs. JUSEC established the FMF office to oversee all aspects of administering the program. The Commission selected the Institute of International Education (IIE) based in Washington, D.C. as the cooperating agency for program publicity and selections of awardess in the U.S.
2. Program Objective and Requirements
The FMF Teacher Program is an educational and professional development program. It is intended to provide participants with an overview of Japan's educational system, culture and people through a 3-week immersion pogram. Hence, it is a very focused and intensive educational experience.
