Getting to know Mrs. Derick was fun for Mrs. Sliney’s class when she visited the class on April 13, 2007.
The students asked the following questions:
Q. What is your educational background?
A. I received my Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree in Reading and Language Arts and my 6th year.
I taught Kindergarten, First Grade and I’ve taught teachers to teach as a K-5 curriculum specialist.
Q. Could you tell us about your family?
A. I have a mom and dad and 2 older brothers, Jeff and John. I also have a husband and 2 children.
My daughter, Emily, is ten years old and my son, Matthew, is seven years old. I have a white German Shepherd
named Tigger and a de-clawed black and white cat named Bob that looks like the color of a cow.
Q. Where do you live?
A. I live in Wethersfield.
Q. Do you ski or snowboard?
A. No, I don’t, but I have tried water skiing, along with drinking a lot of water.
Q. Did you reach your goal in trying to remember all of the students’ names in the school?
A. No, but I’m trying.
Q. What do you like to do with your own kids?
A. I like to play board games with my children especially Monopoly. I also like to play Parcheesi.
Q. What do you like to do?
A. I love AHL Hockey! I’m a big Wolf Pack fan and enjoy going to games.
Q. What’s your favorite part of the school day? Least favorite?
A. I like seeing the children and teaching them. I like to see their smiling faces. My least favorite
is all the paperwork I have to do.
Q. Where is your favorite vacation spot?
A. I like Disney World, but that’s not relaxing enough. I would like to relax more any place warm.
Q. What is your favorite T.V. show?
A. My favorite shows are Survivor, Amazing Race and Grey’s Anatomy.
Q. What is your favorite ice-cream?
A. I like banana ice–cream with fudge.
Q. What is the best way of stopping the kids from fighting?
A. I like to approach situations with kindness and understanding.
Q. How are you planning on keeping the school organized?
A. The school is pretty much organized. I’m just working on some minor adjustments.
Q. What is it like being vice principal?
A. Being vice principal is fun because I get to work with children and teachers.
Q. Why did you want the job of being vice principal?
A. I took the job as vice principal because it was a growing step for me, and when I saw in the newspaper
that I would still be working with students, I applied for the job.
Q. Do you like to eat out? Where?
A. I enjoy food and like a lot of restaurants. I like Morton Steakhouse, and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse,
but don’t go there very often. I also like Wood-n-Tap, Ruby Tuesday, Ninety-Nine, and Outback take-out.
I also enjoy McDonalds. French fries are my favorite food.
Q. If you could say something more about yourself, what would it be?
A. I would like to say that I’m happy being here, my family is very important to me and I love learning,
reading and teaching.
Q. Name one thing you feel strongly about. Why?
A. I think reading is very important. It’s fun to lose yourself in a book.
Q. What do you do in your office?
A. In my office I work on curriculum, fire drills, emergency drills, issues of behavior, family issues,
scheduling meetings, interviewing for substitutes and taking care of a lot of paper work.
Q. What was your favorite subject in school?
A. Reading was my favorite subject because I was always good at it. My least favorite subject was spelling.
Q. What is your favorite color?
A. I think I said pink when I wrote you a letter, but when I thought about it and looked around my house,
I’d say my favorite color is sage (green).
Q. What would you like to be better at?
A. I would like to be able to play an instrument, sing or speak another language. I took Spanish for 2 years
and Italian for 2 years and I can’t speak either. I would like to learn sign language.
Q. Do you like working here at Willard?
A. VERY MUCH!!!
